Niels Foelster was born in Kabul/Afghanistan and grew up in Switzerland and in Germany. He studied music (Sound Engineering) at the UdK Berlin and the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Santa Clarita, USA.In 2001 he worked as assistant of orchestration for the scores of Titan A.E. in Hollywood (Feature Animation, 20th Century Fox). There he edited the score of Paul Haslinger for the orchestrator Tim Simonec.
In 2002 Niels composed the music for "Instrumental Treason", a film of the american director Jake Elsas. It was recorded with the Portland Festival Symphony Orchestra in Oregon, USA.
Since 2001 he works as composer for stage and film.
In 2006 he composed 18 songs on behalf of the "Staatstheater Chemnitz" for the play Charleys Tante (Charley´s Aunt). It was staged 24 times in 2007/2008 under his musical direction.
In 2008 Niels composed music for the horse show "Apassionata
- Die Galanacht der Pferde". His song "Valva" became the musical
highlight of the show "Sehnsucht" ("Longing").
Since 2009 he is teacher for piano, cello and voice at the "Musik- und Kunstschule Havelland" in Brandenburg.
In 2009/2010 Niels worked as composer and musical director for the musical "Der verhexte 1. Schultag" ("The enchanted first day of school") in Rhinow, Brandenburg.
In 2010 the musical ensemble of the "Musik- und Kunstschule Havelland" was invited to give a concert in the He Luting Concert Hall in Shanghai, China.
Niels directed his own musical production "Eine
schrecklich echte Familie - Family Affairs" (A terribly real Family -
Family Affairs) in Rathenow. On his
productions he was responsible for book, lyrics, composition,
orchestration and musical direction.
In 2012/2013 followed a Musical Gala of the "Musik- und Kunstschule Havelland" and the "Städtische Musikschule Rathenow".
In 2013/2014 he directed his own musical production Tessi - gemobbt! (Tessi).
In 2016/2017 two of his musicals were performed in four german schools: "Family Affairs" was staged in Garbsen near Hannover and Vienna. "Tessi" was staged in Hamburg and Bad Sachsa.
On the 18th of June in 2016 the musical Marie & Sophie - Szenen aus dem Leben Marie Curies (Scenes from the life of Marie Curie) premiered in Dallgow-Döberitz. It was performed 13 times in Dallgow, Nauen, Falkensee and Berlin.
The musical Frei wie der Wind! - Die (wirklich wahre) Geschichte der Gebrüder Lilienthal (Free like the Wind - The (really true) story of the Brothers Lilienthal) premiered on the 11th of September in 2016 in Rathenow. It was performed 3 more times in 2016 and 3 more times in 2017.
On the occasion of the 150th birthday of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Marie & Sophie had an extra performance on the 7th of November in 2017 in the "Werkstatt der Kulturen" in Berlin. It followed a last performance on the 10th of November in 2017 in the "Marie-Curie-Gymnasium" in Dallgow-Döberitz.
